Analysis of educational and socioeconomic elements of orthognathic surgery in Egypt: A review of 147 cases.
Orthognathic surgery refers to a group of bone operations that involve movements of the jaw bones in toto or in parts. Orthognathic surgery is indicated when there are severe dentofacial def formities that cannot be managed by orthodontic treatment alone, especially in adulthood, when the natural growth forces have ceased. Dentofacial deformities are described as deformities that affect primarily the jaws and dentition. It may be limited to one jaw or may extend to multiple craniofacial structures.
It ranges from malocclusion to cleft lip and palate, including other disfiguring craniofacfcial syndromes, (e.g. Treacher Collins, Crouzon and Aperts Syndrome) to trauma induced deformities.
